Overview of HDD(Horizontal Directional Drilling) Method

  • Forward and reach openings should be available at the start and end points during construction. In addition, the location of the forward and reach holes should be selected in consideration of the angle of incidence from the ground (8~20°), and the space for equipment installation for construction should be secured around the reach holes and forward holes.
  • It is an environmentally friendly construction method that installs underground pipes by drilling the desired depth/position in the ground without affecting the superstructure during pipe laying and underground construction (electricity, communication, gas, water, sewerage, etc.) and then expanding it to the required size. It is possible to adjust the angle/depth in the desired direction by avoiding obstacles identified in advance even in complex urban areas with narrow sites, and compensates for problems such as traffic congestion and waste of resources due to road opening.
  • Small diameter drill head and high blast pressure of a mixture of water and bentonite can be used to work in a wide variety of formations
  • Using a transmitter sensor/receiver locator (metrology system) that is inserted into the drill head, you can pinpoint the direction of travel and avoid pre-identified obstacles.
  • By mixing bentonite with water and controlling its concentration, it can be safely used to cross roads, railroads, streams and waterways, and underground obstacles without the risk of subsidence/collapse.
  • Noise, fugitive dust, etc. are significantly reduced compared to the detachable construction method, and traffic inconvenience is minimized to prevent safety accidents that may occur during construction.

※ A highly utilized method approved by many countries

Characteristics of HDD Method - Economical, constructible, and environmentally friendly construction methods

Characteristics of HDD Method - Economical, constructible, and environmentally friendly construction methods
Pros Cons Usability Coverage
  • Effective for crossing busy city centers and
roadways with high traffic and obstructions.
  • Reduced construction time - can reduce cons
truction time compared to trenchless methods.
  • Minimized complaints compared to other cons
truction methods such as open pit construction
  • Flexible working time depending on the
    strength of the rock.
  • Limited applicable soil types (Not applicable
for boulder, Gravel and boulder stone)
  • Incremental coverage as complaints increase
    (rail, road, river crossings, etc.)
  • For crossing roads, railroads, embankments,
rivers, and soft ground and obstacles
    in pipeline burial construction
